Think
college students have heard all they need to about sex? Think again!
SEX 101 & 201 are sexuality education programs delivered to
students at Chester County’s three main universities: Cheyney,
West Chester, and Lincoln University. The programs were developed
as a way for students
to learn about sexuality in an interesting and non-threatening way.
What is unique about SEX 101 & 201, and perhaps what contributes
to its success, is that the programs are conducted entirely by
volunteers. Two to three times a year, we train interested volunteers
to serve as Peer Educators who then go out the Universities and
present students with a this interactive, informational program.
SEX 101 & 201 work to:
- give college students the information they need to prevent
unplanned pregnancy and avoid infection with HIV and other sexually
transmitted infections;
- help increase participants’ comfort level when discussing
sexuality; and
- increase their knowledge of community resources for reproductive
health care.
At the end of the program, students receive a SEX 101 CD case
complete with safer sex kit.
Perhaps it’s the free safer sex kit that draws the students
out. Or, maybe it’s the opportunity to talk openly about
sexuality and to hear positive messages that reinforce healthy
behavior. Whatever the reason, in the five years since we first
began offering SEX 101 & 201, the programs’ popularity
has continued to grow.
This year, interest and attendance has hit an all-time high.
Residence Halls packed with students – and their questions – has
become a regular occurrence for SEX 101 & 201 educators. As
educators invested in the future of young adults in our community,
we couldn’t be more pleased.
